Refugee Children Advice and Information Worker
The Welsh Government funds the Wales Migration Partnership (WMP) Refugee Children Advice and Information Worker. This arrangement was in response to one of the recommendations from the Welsh Government's Refugee Inclusion Strategy and the Save the Children Uncertain Futures report. Save the Children published an update to this report in 2008; The care and protection of asylum-seeker and trafficked children in Wales; Agenda for Action. This report was commissioned by 'Save the Children' and undertaken by Swansea University. This latest scoping exercise builds on the previous study and includes key policy and practice recommendations.
The WMP works with local authorities in Wales in offering policy guidance, training and information on working with asylum seeking and refugee children in families and Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC).
Key aims and objectives of the Refugee Children Post
- To develop and maintain a policy, practice and information resource on the rights and entitlements of unaccompanied asylum seeking children, children within families and child migrants.
- To assist in the interpretation and implementation of immigration legislation and policy at a Wales level as it impacts upon refugee children, working with other members of the WMP, such as the Welsh Government, Welsh Local Government Association, UK Border Agency and Local Authorities.
- To provide an information service for local authorities, frontline practitioners and voluntary groups, responding to key areas of need for frontline workers and monitoring queries.
